Back on March 18th, 2010 Cheryl Paul decided to enter Health and Fitness Headquarters annual contest
called
The Amazing Waist.  It is a great event that attracts over 50 contestants each year.

The contest is one where you compete against yourself by losing weight each week.  Every week the
competitors have to participate in a "weigh-in."  At the weigh-in you must lose at least one tenth of a pound
to remain in the contest.
However, you do have one "mulligan" at your disposal in the event you had a bad week.  The last person to
lose weight is crowned the winner!  If more than one person still remains nine months after the start date,
the winner will be decided by the one who loses the greatest percentage of weight.

This year, three people remained in the game until the final weigh-in on October 28th...Dan Johnson, Kara
Murray, and Cheryl Paul.  When it was all said and done, one person stood above the rest and reduced
their body weight by 31%.
Congratulations to Cheryl Paul!

When asked about the contest Cheryl said, "I was glad this opportunity was available. What a great way to
motivate yourself to eat right and exercise.  I enjoyed the camaraderie among the competitors.  Everyone
was so encouraging."

Cheryl worked out daily during the contest, sometimes darkening the doors of HFH North at one o'clock in
the morning!!  WOW, that's dedication!  (Yes, HFH is a 24-hour club).  Cheryl spent most of her time on the
Stairmaster and ellipticals.  When Cheryl hit a plateau, she switched things up and went to the treadmill
and recumbant bike.  With this change she also increased the intensity of her workout (that is, she made
herself sweat a little more each week.)  With exercise it is important you understand the importance of
making regular changes in their exercise routine.  You don't want your body to adapt to want you are doing.
Once it adapts, it no longer needs to change and you plateau.

When it came to nutrition, Cheryl says she didn't go on a diet.  She just made healthy nutritional choices like
cutting back on portion sizes and snacking on good foods like fruits.  This would help her get to the next
meal.  Cheryl says, "I was not perfect with my eating, in fact, there were times I'd have a candy bar in the
middle of the night.  If I did that, I would just spend more time exercising the next day.  You can't let the
mistakes get you down."

Cheryl said the members, along with the staff at HFH North (where she worked out), were very encouraging
to her.  June and Melissa, who she saw so often during the 9 month contest, helped her a bunch.  Cheryl
said that Melissa would act as if she was a reporter and ask her questions when she came in to check on
her progress.  "It was very funny," commented Cheryl.

Cheryl Paul learned a lot from this experience and says she will continue doing what helped her win the
contest...consistent exercise and making healthy nutritional choices.  She knows she will have days that
don't go so great.  That won't stop her.  She will make adjustments and revert to doing the things that
worked for her.

Great job Cheryl!  We are all proud of your accomplishment.  Keep it up.
